Workshop Produces New Study Guidelines for Traditional Chinese Medicine

The Institute convened a workshop in May 2012, to develop recommendations that steered the design of comparative effectiveness research (CER) studies of traditional Chinese medicine.

The guidelines were formally defined in an effectiveness guidance document (EGD) authored by workshop leader and Institute Scholar Claudia Witt, MD, an expert in comparative effectiveness research for integrative medicine. The EGD was published in the journal Trials

Resulting from extensive consultation with experts and stakeholders, EGDs outline best practices and ensure uniformity in the way that studies are conducted. Participants in the workshop included researchers, TCM specialists, and patients.

Based on the workshop discussion, Dr. Witt and her collaborators published an article in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine: "Building a Strategic Framework for Comparative Effectiveness Research in Complementary and Integrative Medicine."
